Hair extensions are a technique of adding hair that is not your own onto your own hair. This is achieved by different methods (hair weft, Braiding, Bonding, Strand by Strand, Latch hook etc.). They are applied by skilled hair professionals and offer instant methods of changing your appearance. They can be washed, cut and styled to a person’s individual taste.

Hair extensions are made from a range of human and synthetic fibers. Synthetic fibers include Kanekalon and Toyokalon, and can differ from brand to brand. Synthetic hair in general is far less expensive than human hair, and is available in a wide array of colors and textures, from natural to extraordinary. However when considering hair extensions you must keep in mind that synthetic hair is just that synthetic and can not withstand hot temperatures so straightening and curling the hair is not an option as it will singe. Human hair for hair weft is available in many different grades, and may be advertised by ethnic origin; India, mainland China and other countries in continental Asia are the top suppliers for ‘virgin’, or unprocessed hair.

Synthetic hair extensions are made of a wide array of different synthetic fibers. Synthetic hair, just as human hair, comes in weave (hair weft) and single strands for braids. Synthetic hair does not last as long as human hair for hair weft because it gets quickly damaged from the sun. The quality of hair varies greatly, and if well maintained, synthetic hair can last up to a year. It will never look as human hair, as it is stiff and not bouncy at all. Synthetic hair is much less expensive than human hair for hair extensions.

We can’t heating appliances such as curling irons and straightening combs generally should never be used on synthetic hair for hair weft. There are newer versions of synthetic hair from some brands that claim to allow styling with lower temperatures of heating appliances. Generally people should steer clear of such claims because the golden rule with synthetic hair weft is that heat is not an option. Synthetic hair is better used for hair weft. Typically when the synthetic hair is shaped it’s best not to change it, it is "What you see is what you get".

Remy Hair used in hair extensions is not always virgin hair, once virgin hair has been colored or chemically processed in any way short of removing the cuticles it is referred to as Remy. Remy Hair can be categorized in the ‘premium’ segment, as far as hair quality is concerned. Remy Hair for hair weft has its cuticle intact and running in the same direction “unidirectional cuticle” to prevent tangling. The cuticles protect the hair from damage and give the hair its natural looking for hair weft. Remy hair extensions are strictly reserved for those who demand only the highest quality. Cuticle hair is created by careful processing which leaves the cuticle layer of the hair in place. The result is a superior hair item that colors beautifully – it has the highlights and natural shading just like your hair.

For hair weft under 18 inches, one packet is enough for full head. Over 18 inches, you should need more the one. If a hairdresser is doing your hair it is advisable to check with them as to how much you require for the hairstyle.

For the pre bonded hair extensions, you should need 150-200 strands. Once again this depends on the style.
For other methods such as strand by strand hair extensions you will need to consult with your hair dresser.
