Weft hair extensions are strips of hair attached together at the top with a band or seam. The weft base is attached to your existing hair by clipping, sewing, gluing or taping it in, while the ends flow free. Weft extensions come in both human and synthetic hair. Regardless of what kind you use, taking care of your extensions is essential if you want them to last.

Styling

Do not use hot styling tools on synthetic hair, as it will melt and ruin the extension and your styling tool. If you can avoid using hot tools on human hair extensions, they will last longer. If you absolutely must use a styling tool, use as little hair product as possible on your extensions to avoid excessive washing.

When styling, washing and grooming hair extensions, be very gentle. Unlike human hair, which regenerates when it falls out while you are brushing or washing it, once hair falls out of a weft extension, the extension is just that much thinner.

Washing

You only need to wash hair extensions once they feel or look dirty, which is dependent on how often you wear them. The less you wash them, the longer they will last. Before washing your extensions, untangle them by brushing them out with your fingers to avoid pulling out strands. Fill a large bowl or a sink with room-temperature water. Place the ends of the hair extensions in the water and drape the weft base over the side of the bowl or sink. Keeping the base dry will ensure that you get many more applications out of the extensions. Wash each hair weft separately with a mild shampoo to avoid tangling.

Conditioning synthetic hair is optional, but you should condition human hair weft extensions at least every other time you wash them. Without the natural oils from the scalp that your natural hair receives, human hair extensions need conditioner to keep them looking shiny and feeling soft.

Always allow hair extensions to air-dry. Blow drying is an unnecessary strain on human hair extensions, and it’s likely to ruin synthetic hair. You can style human hair extensions with a flat iron or curling iron once they are completely dry. Synthetic hair should take its original shape when dry.
